Seeing this, already knowing what a genius Kieslowski was to become, inevitably affects one's perception. I really wish it were possible to wipe knowledge of his subsequent work from one's mind and evaluate the film on a standalone basis. That being impossible, here's my take. It offers a very credible look at the many aspects of life in Poland at the time of its making. It offers a subtle insight into the damage which can be caused by ostensibly commendable exposure of corruption. Alas, the disintegration of the lead protagonist's marriage was captured without subtlety. Various Kieslowski standard components are identifiable: chance, glass, milk (even the milkman pestering for the empty bottles) etc. and Jerzy Stuhr appeared in several Kieslowski films. A pleasure to watch, but I really wonder what I'd have made of it, had I known nothing of Kieslowski's subsequent work.
